Curiosity Celebrates 5,000 Sols on Mars, Continues Study of Mount Sharp Ripple

The 5,000‑sol milestone demonstrates Curiosity’s durability and sustained scientific output, enabling continued investigation of Mars’ sedimentary processes and informing future mission designs.
What happened
On August 29, 2026, NASA’s Curiosity rover marked 5,000 Martian days—more than 5,137 Earth days—since landing in Gale crater. The rover has climbed over 1 km above its touchdown point, a record for a Mars rover.
Curiosity is now examining a wind‑formed, long, narrow ripple named “Chocolatal” on the slopes of Mount Sharp. Planned science activities include ChemCam LIBS analyses of the ripple’s top and surrounding sand, APXS measurements of its coarse surface, and Mastcam and MAHLI mosaics to assess layering and grain size.
The MAHLI mosaics are named in honor of late colleague Paul Geissler, a TAR expert. The mission team looks forward to the next 5,000 sols of exploration.
