Curiosity Unfolds Wind‑Blown Sediment Secrets on Sol 5003–5009
WHY IT MATTERS
The planned analyses will refine models of Martian wind‑blown sediment layering and bedrock composition, advancing knowledge of the planet’s aeolian history and past environmental conditions.
What happened
Curiosity celebrated 14 years on Mars, 5,000 sols, and a 1‑km climb up Mount Sharp while executing a tightly scheduled science plan. On Sol 5003 the rover unstowed its arm to study the long, narrow ripple field known as Chocolatal. The team combined APXS chemical analyses, MAHLI imaging, and a special MAHLI “Dog’s Eye” mosaic to view potential layering along the sides of a wheel‑scuffed sand patch.
A short drive on Sol 5004 followed, and the arm was again deployed to image the scuff and the ripple’s top. Over the Labor Day weekend Curiosity will target a gray stone that drew the crew’s attention, performing APXS, MAHLI, and ChemCam LIBS observations.
Mastcam will re‑point toward Chocolatal, while ChemCam will collect additional LIBS data on several nearby geological patches. These coordinated measurements aim to clarify the sedimentary structure and bedrock composition of the area.
