Cypriot MEPs Push Energy Focus in EU Mediterranean Pact Debate
WHY IT MATTERS
The debate underscores the EU’s role in stabilizing the Mediterranean through energy cooperation while confronting regional tensions, especially Turkey’s actions that threaten project implementation and regional security.
What happened
During a Strasbourg plenary on Tuesday, Cypriot members of the European Parliament urged the EU to prioritize energy projects in the Mediterranean as part of a new pact. MEP Costas Mavrides highlighted existing initiatives such as the EastMed gas forum, the Great Sea Interconnector, and the EastMed pipeline, arguing that Cyprus has led these efforts while condemning Turkish interference.
He and fellow Cypriot MEPs tabled amendments calling for the protection of EU energy security and the condemnation of Turkey’s provocations. Meanwhile, Greek MEP Giorgos Georgiou warned against using the pact for geopolitical expansion, advocating a people‑centred, socially just approach.
The resolution, set for a vote Wednesday, will shape EU‑Mediterranean relations and address energy, migration, and security concerns.
