Cyprus and Greece Sign Memorandum to Strengthen Educational Cooperation
WHY IT MATTERS
It strengthens Cyprus‑Greece educational ties, preserves shared heritage, and ensures future generations understand their intertwined histories, reinforcing regional stability and cultural identity.
What happened
At the Holy Archdiocese in Nicosia, Cyprus Education Minister Athena Michaelidou and Greek counterpart Sofia Zacharaki signed a bilateral memorandum that moves beyond intent to a concrete, measurable plan. The agreement will launch joint teacher and clergy training, an annual school competition, educational visits, and digital infrastructure projects aimed at highlighting Cypriot history.
Church leaders—Archbishop George and Metropolitan Chrysostomos III—joined the signing, underscoring the symbolic role of the churches in preserving Greek language and heritage. The pact follows Greece’s 2025 decision to include Cyprus’ National Day in its school curriculum and its commitment to honour the EOKA struggle nationwide.
By embedding shared history in education, the memorandum seeks to deepen cultural ties and equip younger generations with a clearer sense of their collective past amid rapid technological change.
