Cyprus 'Technically Ready' for Schengen Area Membership
WHY IT MATTERS
Cyprus' potential membership in the Schengen area has significant implications for EU migration policies and cooperation with third countries, highlighting the need for coordinated action and effective crisis management mechanisms.
What happened
Cyprus has met all technical requirements to join the Schengen area, according to Migration Deputy Minister Nicholas Ioannides. However, a political agreement is now needed to finalize the process.
Ioannides expressed Cyprus' solidarity with Spain following the recent crisis in Ceuta and emphasized the need for coordinated action to safeguard the EU territory and Schengen area.
He also backed closer cooperation with third countries to increase migrant returns and improve situational awareness and early-warning capabilities to respond to large-scale irregular migration movements.
