Cyprus Urges U.S. Support for Great Sea Interconnector to Connect Island’s Grid
WHY IT MATTERS
The interconnector and 3+1 cooperation aim to reduce Cyprus’s energy isolation, enhance regional security, and diversify supply routes, strengthening the eastern Mediterranean’s resilience.
What happened
Energy Minister Michael Damianos met U. S. Senator Rick Scott on Cyprus to stress the island’s need for an electrical interconnector.
As the only EU member without a grid link, Cyprus views the Great Sea Interconnector—planned to connect its grid with those of Greece and Israel—as a strategic priority for energy security and regional stability. Damianos also highlighted U. S.
involvement in Cyprus’s eastern Mediterranean gas fields, citing Chevron’s Aphrodite and ExxonMobil’s Glafcos and Pegasus projects. The two leaders discussed a ‘3+1’ cooperation framework among Cyprus, Greece, Israel, and the United States to strengthen energy corridors, protect critical infrastructure, and diversify the region’s supply.
