What happened
A July 8 study in Biology Letters reports that the yellowtail damselfish (Dascyllus flavicaudus) speeds the repair of injuries on Pocillopora corals in the Indo‑Pacific. Researchers observed that larger wounds healed faster when the fish were present, suggesting a stronger mutualistic link than previously understood.
Prior work had shown damselfish help clean coral wounds and increase tolerance to warming waters; this new evidence demonstrates active tissue repair facilitated by the fish. The study, conducted in French Polynesia, highlights how such species interactions can build resilience in stressed reef ecosystems.
The authors hope the findings will prompt further research into similar relationships and inform conservation strategies for warming oceans.
