DDR4 RAM Returns as CPUs and Motherboards Re‑enable Dual‑Memory Support
WHY IT MATTERS
Reintroducing DDR4 support can reduce upgrade costs and keep older components relevant, giving consumers and builders more affordable options amid rising memory prices.
What happened
CPU makers are responding to rising memory costs by reintroducing support for DDR4 RAM. Intel and AMD are developing new processors that will work with the older, cheaper memory type.
Gigabyte announced that two of its motherboard lines will support upcoming CPUs on the LGA 1700 socket, which originally launched in 2021 with Alder Lake and supported both DDR4 and DDR5. The socket was phased out for DDR5‑only in 2024, but Gigabyte says dual‑format support is being revived.
The move could lower upgrade costs for PC builders and consumers.
