WHY IT MATTERS
Cyprus’s pledge to modernise its armed forces and strengthen ties with key allies underscores its intent to play a more active role in regional security amid rising geopolitical tensions.
What happened
During the Independence Day military parade, Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas announced that Cyprus will keep strengthening and modernising its defence capabilities while deepening strategic partnerships. He echoed President Nikos Christodoulides’ call for continuous vigilance and operational readiness amid a complex geopolitical environment.
Palmas praised the National Guard and security forces, thanked Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias for attending and highlighted the participation of Greek fighter jets, and welcomed ambassadors and defence attachés from Egypt, France, Britain and the United States.
