New Zealand Advances Design Phase for Hawke's Bay, Palmerston North, and Tauranga Hospital Redevelopments

Health Minister Simeon Brown announced that design work for the Hawke's Bay, Palmerston North, and Tauranga hospital redevelopments has reached a key milestone. Early concept images now show the proposed acute‑services buildings that will house emergency, intensive‑care, maternity, operating‑theatre and other critical units under one roof. The concept provides a common foundation that can be adapted to each site’s specific needs. All site master planning, feasibility studies and investigations have been completed, and the projects are now moving into the preliminary design phase. Funding from the 2026 Budget will support design, site planning and preparatory works while detailed business cases are refined. The new layouts aim to increase capacity where demand is highest, shorten distances between services and improve patient and staff experience for decades to come.
