What happened
Scientists have launched an interactive web portal that uses satellite imagery, historical aerial photos and artificial‑intelligence algorithms to monitor permafrost thaw across the Arctic in near‑real time. The system tracks changes in over 4 million lakes and 70 million thermokarst ponds, flagging sudden drainage events that signal rapid ice loss.
In the summer of 2026, the Seward and Baldwin peninsulas in northwestern Alaska saw more than 30 lakes drain within weeks, a pattern that has been occurring every June and July across the region.
By providing up‑to‑date maps of ice‑rich versus safer ground, the tool gives residents, planners and researchers a practical way to anticipate ground subsidence and avoid costly damage.
