Discord Proposes Measures to Enhance Child Safety in Brazil

Discord, the company behind the communication app, has submitted a proposal to Brazil's Federal Attorney General's Office to strengthen user safety, particularly for children and adolescents. The proposal aims to address shortcomings in verifying users' ages and protecting minors under 18. The company presented the proposal after meeting with officials from the Attorney General's Office, the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, and the National Data Protection Authority. The Attorney General's Office will review the proposal in partnership with other federal agencies and may draft a Conduct Adjustment Agreement to bring the platform into compliance with Brazilian legal requirements. The move comes after a 13-year-old girl was coerced into taking her own life during a livestream on Discord channels in July. Discord has expressed its willingness to comply with legal requirements and address identified shortcomings. The company maintains that it does not tolerate groups or individuals who promote or encourage violence and has teams dedicated to dismantling such groups and removing content that violates its internal policies.
