Discord Introduces Automatic Age Estimation, Replacing Video ID Verification

Discord has rolled out a new global age‑assurance system that automatically estimates users’ ages from multiple account signals. The change takes effect today in all countries except Australia and the UK. Users who are believed to be between 13 and 17 will face account restrictions, while older users remain unaffected. The update follows Discord’s decision to halt its earlier age‑verification rollout in February, which had required adults to submit video selfies or ID documents and drew backlash over data‑privacy concerns. By shifting to an automated estimation model, Discord aims to reduce the need for personal data collection while still protecting minors on the platform.
