DR Congo: WFP Boosts Food Assistance and Logistics Support as Ebola Spreads to Eighth Province
WHY IT MATTERS
A funding shortfall could disrupt life-saving food assistance, humanitarian flights, and cargo transport, putting the lives of thousands of people at risk in the DRC.
What happened
The World Food Programme (WFP) is strengthening its food assistance and logistics support to the response in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as Ebola spreads to an eighth province. The WFP is providing emergency food assistance, constructing Ebola Treatment Centres (ETCs), and offering essential logistics, telecommunications, and air transport services to enable health partners to reach affected communities.
The WFP needs $214 million over the next six months to support the most vulnerable populations in eastern DRC, affected by conflict and Ebola.
A rapid and flexible funding is crucial to maintain food assistance, humanitarian flights, cargo transport, and treatment infrastructure as the outbreak reaches communities with limited services and significant humanitarian needs.
