DR Congo Sees Escalating Displacement Amid Ongoing Conflict

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has witnessed a significant increase in displacement due to armed conflict in August 2026. The main driver of displacement remains the proliferation and geographic expansion of clashes involving various groups, including the AFC/M23, FARDC, and Wazalendo. South Kivu is the main displacement hotspot, with approximately 27,324 newly displaced households, primarily in Kalehe Territory. North Kivu also saw high displacement, with around 22,380 newly displaced households, mainly in Walikale, Lubero, and Rutshuru territories. In Ituri, ADF attacks led to the displacement of approximately 3,105 households in Mambasa Territory. Displaced households are mostly staying with host families or seeking refuge in spontaneous sites, schools, and churches, putting pressure on local resources and basic services. The situation remains dire, with affected populations in need of assistance for shelter, essential household items, protection, health, food security, and WASH.
