Seven of Nine Planetary Boundaries Transgressed, 2026 Planetary Health Check Warns

The third edition of the Planetary Health Check, released in September 2026, warns that human activities are eroding the planet’s stability and resilience. Seven of the nine planetary boundaries—climate change, biosphere integrity, novel entities, freshwater, land‑use change, nitrogen and phosphorus flows, and ocean acidification—are transgressed, and pressure on each is rising. The ozone‑depletion boundary remains stable, but recovery has plateaued. While aerosol loading is falling worldwide, South Asia still exceeds safe limits, and that trend is worsening. All seven boundaries are moving further into danger zones, threatening humanity’s safe operating space.
