Ebola Outbreak in DRC Highlights Food Insecurity Crisis

The Democratic Republic of Congo is grappling with a Bundibugyo‑strain Ebola outbreak that has killed more than 3,000 people and produced more than twice that number of confirmed cases, according to the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At the same time, analysts report that roughly 26 million people in the region face a severe food insecurity crisis, a factor that heightens both the spread and the fatality of the virus. The World Health Organization’s director‑general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, noted that hunger weakens immunity, making individuals more vulnerable to infection. In response, the World Food Programme is delivering food to the families of patients, especially children, to keep them in isolation and reduce community transmission.
