Brazil Strengthens Electronic Voting Security Ahead of 2026 Elections

The Superior Electoral Court has upgraded the electronic voting system in preparation for the October 4, 2026 elections. Secretary of Information Technology Júlio Valente explained that the process is now fully decentralized and publicly verifiable. At each polling station, the machine records results, prints a ballot‑box report, and transmits the data through encrypted channels. Before inclusion in the national tally, the files are checked for authenticity, including a digital signature and confirmation that they originated from the assigned machine. The system also employs biometric authentication to ensure that only registered voters can cast a ballot; if biometrics fail, a poll worker may authorize the vote with proper documentation. Oversight is built into every stage, with dozens of audit points that allow political parties, candidates, and independent observers to monitor the process. Valente highlighted that since the system’s introduction in 1996, no documented fraud has occurred, and the shift from paper ballots has eliminated past vulnerabilities. The first round of the 2026 elections will see Brazilians vote for president, governors, senators, and representatives, with a possible runoff on October 25 if needed.
