Emirates Gains Berlin Route, 777X Renewal Still on Hold
WHY IT MATTERS
The new Berlin service boosts Emirates’ European connectivity, but the 777X delay and rejection could limit the airline’s long‑haul expansion and fleet efficiency in the coming years.
What happened
Emirates has finally received German approval to launch daily flights between Dubai International Airport and Berlin Brandenburg Airport, adding a fifth German city to its network after decades of lobbying. The airline will operate seven weekly services to Berlin, expanding its presence in Europe.
However, the long‑anticipated Boeing 777X, which Emirates had ordered to modernise its long‑haul fleet, remains delayed. The carrier has announced it will reject the first ten to eleven 777X aircraft it receives, citing delivery uncertainties.
The dual developments mean Emirates can grow its route network while its fleet renewal plan stalls, potentially affecting future capacity and service offerings.
