Cyprus Environmental Groups Demand Action to Protect Limassol Bay

The Federation of Environmental Organisations of Cyprus (Opok) has called for stricter measures to protect Limassol Bay, citing recent incidents of pollution. The group demands a coordinated and scientifically documented response to combat pollution, including the full activation of the Pollution Response Supervision and Coordination Group (PESA). Opok also appeals to the House environment committee to implement systematic controls and measures for early detection of pollution. The group emphasizes the importance of a specific staffing and operation schedule, clear distribution of responsibilities, and a common response protocol. This includes the implementation of the seventh protocol of the Barcelona convention on integrated coastal zone management, which is crucial for the integrated and ecosystem-based management of the coastal zone. The call follows several incidents of pollution in the Limassol sea, including sewage flowing into the sea and unpleasant smells and waste appearing along the coastline.
