Hong Kong Invites Expressions of Interest for Onshore Power Supply at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal
WHY IT MATTERS
It signals Hong Kong’s commitment to greener cruise operations and opens a private‑sector opportunity to reduce emissions and enhance the terminal’s sustainability.
What happened
The Environment & Ecology Bureau and the Tourism Commission announced an expression‑of‑interest (EOI) call for an onshore power supply (OPS) facility at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal (KTCT). The initiative is a feedback‑gathering exercise, not a procurement or tender, and aims to assess private sector willingness to invest in and operate the infrastructure.
Space for the OPS was built into the terminal’s original design to accommodate future environmental upgrades. A government‑commissioned study confirmed the technical feasibility of the OPS but highlighted that long‑term economic costs and benefits still need evaluation.
Submissions are due by noon on December 14, allowing the government to gauge commercial viability and support green shipping.
