Turkish Cypriot Leader Invited to COP31 in Antalya Amid Diplomatic Tensions
WHY IT MATTERS
The joint hosting and attendance of leaders from both sides highlight the importance of diplomatic dialogue in addressing climate action while navigating complex political recognition issues.
What happened
Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman confirmed he has received an invitation from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to attend next month’s COP31 climate summit in Antalya, the Turkish Mediterranean coastal city. Erhurman noted that Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides has also announced his attendance, a customary move for the Republic of Cyprus.
Turkey, co-hosting the summit with Australia, will see its Environment Minister Murat Kurum chair the event while Australian Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen will preside over negotiations between political leaders.
Despite Turkey’s non‑recognition of Christodoulides as head of state, the host country cannot unilaterally exclude any United Nations member from the 12‑day summit, underscoring the diplomatic balance at play.
