ESA’s FLEX Satellite Begins Mapping Plant Fluorescence from Space

FLEX’s global fluorescence maps will refine climate and carbon‑cycle models, enabling more accurate predictions of vegetation responses to drought and informing agricultural and conservation strategies.
What happened
ESA’s Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) has launched its FLORIS instrument to detect the faint glow plants emit during photosynthesis. This fluorescence, invisible to the eye, reveals how leaves use sunlight and respond to heat, drought, pests, and other stresses.
FLEX will scan the planet, producing the first global map of plant fluorescence. The data will give scientists a new tool to assess plant health and photosynthetic activity on a worldwide scale.
By tracking how vegetation reacts to climate change and drought, the mission will improve models of the global carbon and water cycles and help predict how ecosystems will respond to future environmental pressures.
