EU to Approve Record 1,650 New Russia Sanctions on Wednesday
WHY IT MATTERS
The expanded sanctions deepen EU pressure on Russia’s military capabilities, curbing missile production and tightening economic restrictions, and signal continued international condemnation of Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
What happened
EU envoys are set to approve a record 1,650 new sanctions listings against Russia on Wednesday, the largest single package since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The European External Action Service proposed the measures, which will be forwarded to EU foreign ministers for final adoption next Monday.
Of the new designations, 1,570 involve entities and individuals tied to Russia’s military‑industrial complex, with more than half focused on missile production. The package also includes several Russia‑related listings under other EU frameworks, such as North Korea restrictions.
With these additions, the EU’s main Russia sanctions regulation will now contain just over 3,000 designations, encompassing travel bans, transaction prohibitions and asset freezes.
