EU AI Adviser Calls for Shift to Adoption to Boost Economy

EU’s chief AI adviser Jim Hagemann Snabe urged commissioners on Sept. 4 to prioritize deploying AI over competing in model development, arguing the technology is Europe’s best chance to lift sluggish productivity. He outlined a plan to map AI use across health, agriculture, transport, defense and manufacturing, and to remove barriers such as testing rules for autonomous vehicles and secure data spaces for personalised medicine. The Commission will conduct sector analyses and pilot projects through December, producing a policy package and a final strategy in early 2027, while also assessing societal impacts in early 2024. Snabe’s message follows criticism that the EU lags in enforcing the AI Act and fears of external dependence on U. S. and Chinese models.
