EU Signals Possible Resumption of Brazilian Chicken and Honey Exports
WHY IT MATTERS
The potential reopening of key food markets could boost Brazil’s export earnings and strengthen trade ties with the EU, while the outcome for beef and steel highlights ongoing regulatory challenges.
What happened
During a G20 Trade Ministers’ meeting in Milwaukee, European Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič met with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and Minister of Development Márcio Elias Rosa to discuss lifting a ban that began on September 3. An audit of Brazil’s poultry and honey supply chains, completed this month, found the country’s production systems meet EU standards on antimicrobial use.
The European Commission’s Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food, and Feed will review the audit report in a technical meeting on October 20‑21 before deciding whether shipments can resume. Brazil also seeks a similar review for beef, though its stricter life‑cycle tracking requirements make the process longer.
The discussion also touched on EU steel import quotas that could affect Brazilian exports in 2027.
