New Zealand Simplifies Approval of Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines

The Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines Amendment Bill cleared its final reading, streamlining New Zealand’s approval system for new agricultural products. The changes reduce delays and costs for farmers, growers, and manufacturers by matching approval pathways to risk levels, allowing greater use of overseas regulator assessments, modernising public notification, and tightening manufacturing oversight through a Good Manufacturing Practice scheme. The government maintains that safety, animal welfare, and export reputation will remain protected. The bill is expected to bring faster access to dairy treatments, targeted crop protection, and products that lower nutrient losses, emissions, and improve resource efficiency, while freeing manufacturers to invest more in innovation for the primary sector.
