Romanian F‑16s Neutralize Russian Drone Boat Threat Near Black Sea Gas Platform
WHY IT MATTERS
The event highlights the security risks to critical EU energy infrastructure and demonstrates Romania’s rapid military response to protect its future gas supply and workforce.
What happened
On August 20, the Romanian Coast Guard detected a Russian‑supplied drone boat carrying explosives within a few hundred metres of the Neptun Deep drilling platform in the Black Sea. Defense Minister Radu Miruță reported that two Romanian F‑16 fighter jets were dispatched to the site and used cannon fire to disable the unmanned vessel.
Army specialists then conducted a controlled detonation, preventing damage to the platform and the hundreds of workers on site.
The incident underscores the vulnerability of the Neptun Deep project, which is slated to make Romania the largest natural‑gas producer in the European Union when full production commences in 2027.
