Financial Analyst Reveals Over P800 Million in Vice President Duterte’s Undisclosed Wealth
WHY IT MATTERS
The allegations spotlight potential corruption at the highest levels, challenging public trust in elected officials and underscoring the need for rigorous financial disclosure and accountability.
What happened
On October 9, a forensic accountant named Alexander Cabrera testified before the Philippine impeachment court, alleging that Vice President Sara Duterte and her husband, Mans Carpio, hold roughly P817 million in assets that have never been declared. Cabrera, a former PwC chairman, examined the couple’s audited statements, tax returns, and bank records, finding gaps between reported income and actual cash flows, undeclared properties, and unreported company earnings from Cale88, Metro Chow and Gencorp.
He also flagged unusual credit‑card purchases, 17 unreported insurance policies, and a pattern of “check‑kiting” that could hide money from year‑end reports. The prosecution has dropped the bribery case, but the defense will cross‑examine Cabrera on Monday.
The findings raise questions about the integrity of public officials and the transparency of their finances.
