New Zealand Highway Realignment Project Begins
WHY IT MATTERS
The project will create jobs during construction and provide a safe and reliable road for freight and communities, supporting economic growth in the region.
What happened
The New Zealand Government has started the Waikare Gorge realignment project on State Highway 2, which will improve road safety and resilience. The 4km realignment will support economic growth in the East Coast region.
A 260-metre single span bridge will be built 65m above the river, replacing the current section prone to slips. The project's cost has decreased to $275-$325m due to competitive tender pricing and design innovation.
Construction is expected to start next month and take 3-4 years to complete, with minimal traffic disruption.
