Chad Grapples with Ongoing Sudanese Refugee Crisis and Drought

The ongoing crisis poses significant humanitarian and socio-economic challenges for Chad, which is already hosting a large number of Sudanese refugees. The situation highlights the need for coordinated efforts to address the root causes of the crisis and provide support to affected populations.
What happened
The situation along Chad's borders remains concerning, with the provinces of Sila, Ouaddaï, Wadi-Fira, and Ennedi-Est continuing to feel the effects of the conflict in neighboring Sudan. Since the end of August, Chad has been affected by the direct repercussions of the conflict, including drone strikes in the provinces of Wadi-Fira and Ennedi-Est.
A Chadian citizen was reportedly killed by Rapid Support Forces (RSF) elements in a locality near Koulbous in the Wadi-Fira province on September 11. Cases of abductions have also been reported in this border zone.
The degradation of climate conditions and the effects of drought, described by the World Food Programme (WFP) as one of the most severe in the region since 1984, continue to affect livelihoods, compromise harvests, and fuel new population movements towards eastern Chad. The Chadian government has conducted an evaluation mission in the eastern provinces to assess the extent of the rainfall deficit and identify adapted mitigation measures.
