Flooding in Thailand
WHY IT MATTERS
The flooding in Thailand highlights the impact of extreme weather events on communities and the environment.
What happened
Flooding in Thailand has affected over 4 million people and caused dozens of deaths, according to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The flooding has occurred in 50 provinces across the country, with government agencies estimating that about 270,000 hectares of farmland have been damaged.
The flooding is attributed to persistent heavy rains punctuated by intense downpours, which have left low-lying areas under sustained flooding.
The Bang Pakong River and nearby agricultural areas and aquaculture facilities have been inundated, with some areas receiving nearly 300 millimeters of rain over a 48-hour period.
