What happened
Researchers have found that the act of flushing a toilet can generate a plume of aerosolized particles that may carry dangerous pathogens such as Legionella, influenza, and norovirus. The study measured the particles released during a typical flush and found that they disperse into the breathing zone of adults and can remain airborne for at least 20 seconds.
Even when the toilet lid is closed, the plume can still escape, indicating that lid closure alone does not eliminate the risk. The findings highlight that shared bathroom facilities could become sites of airborne disease spread, especially in high‑traffic settings.
The study suggests that additional measures—such as improved ventilation or flushing protocols—may be necessary to reduce exposure to these airborne pathogens.
