Ford’s Fathom Pickup Comes Equipped with Built‑In Home‑Battery Inverter
WHY IT MATTERS
The integrated inverter eliminates the need for a separate wallbox, making it easier for owners to use the Fathom as a home backup power source and potentially reducing installation costs and complexity.
What happened
Ford announced that its upcoming sub‑$30,000 electric pickup, the Fathom, will include a built‑in inverter that converts the truck’s DC power to AC for home use. The feature, which previously required a separate wallbox on the now‑discontinued F‑150 Lightning, allows every Fathom to act as a backup battery for a household.
The truck, slated for release next year, will cost roughly $30,000—about $5,000 more than the competitor Blank Slate—but will offer additional conveniences such as an infotainment system, CarPlay, electric windows, and access to Ford’s dealership network.
By integrating the inverter, Ford simplifies the vehicle‑to‑home setup and removes the need for an external inverter unit.
