Former Kerala Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson Rejects BJP Offer, Cites Political Disinterest
WHY IT MATTERS
The episode illustrates how national parties seek to recruit senior civil servants and the personal decisions that shape the boundary between public service and politics.
What happened
Jiji Thomson, the former chief secretary of Kerala, revealed that in 2016 he was approached by BJP leader Gyanesh Kumar while on a flight to New Delhi. Kumar suggested that Thomson could run for a BJP ticket and, if elected, become a Union minister.
Thomson declined the offer, stating he had no interest in politics.
He has previously been approached by several political leaders for electoral positions, but has consistently turned them down.
