Formula 1 Returns to Africa with 10-Year Agreement to Race in Rwanda
WHY IT MATTERS
This agreement marks a significant moment in Formula 1's history, bringing the sport back to Africa for the first time since 1993 and expanding its global reach. It also reflects the country's ambition to become a globally recognised hub for sport, tourism, innovation, and business.
What happened
The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) has announced a 10-year agreement to bring Formula 1 back to Africa, with the first race scheduled to take place in Rwanda once the new purpose-built circuit in Bugesera is completed.
The circuit will be developed to FIA Grade 1 standards and will serve as a year-round destination for international motorsport, major events, conferences, and entertainment.
The project aims to create a lasting legacy by supporting tourism, attracting investment, developing local talent, and creating new opportunities for communities and businesses.
