The Foxton Solar Farm expands New Zealand’s renewable capacity, creates local jobs, improves water quality, and advances the country’s goal of a resilient, affordable energy future by 2050.
What happened
The government has granted fast‑track approval to the Foxton Solar Farm, a 220 MWp project that will generate about 345 GWh of renewable electricity each year, enough to power roughly 47,000 homes. Genesis Energy lodged the application in February 2026, and the independent expert panel delivered a decision in just three and a half months. The farm will be built on land currently used for livestock and dairy farming, and is expected to reduce nitrogen leaching by roughly 25,700 kg per year, improving local water quality.
Construction will create around 100 jobs and inject direct and indirect economic benefits into the region. This project is the 32nd to receive fast‑track approval and the eighth renewable energy project to do so.
In total, fast‑track projects will add more than 990 MW of new generation capacity, representing over five per cent of New Zealand’s current electricity output and enough to power about 322,000 households annually. The initiative supports the government’s aim to double renewable generation by 2050 and to provide abundant, affordable, and reliable power as demand rises.
