France Allocates €1 Billion to Support Drought-Stricken Farmers
WHY IT MATTERS
The €1 billion allocation will provide crucial support to around 30,000 to 35,000 farms at risk of bankruptcy, ensuring the country's agricultural production can recover and adapt to climate change.
What happened
The French government has pledged to spend more than €1 billion to help farmers cope with the devastating heat and drought of the summer. Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard announced the package, which aims to compensate farmers for losses, prevent bankruptcies, and ensure agricultural production gets back on track.
The plan includes speeding up payments under the national solidarity scheme, creating an agricultural recovery fund, and providing targeted tax relief.
The government is also considering extending a program to help farmers purchase fertilizer and non-road agricultural diesel.
