Galileo Achieves First Real-World Positioning with Signal Authentication Service

What happened
On 16 September, five operational Galileo satellites transmitted a new encrypted signal for a two‑hour test over Europe. Ground stations in Andøya, Norway, and ESA’s navigation laboratory at ESTEC in the Netherlands received the signal and successfully determined their positions.
The exercise marked the first real‑world use of Galileo’s upcoming Signal Authentication Service (SAS), which is designed to verify the authenticity of satellite broadcasts and protect against spoofing. Previous draft tests had failed to meet the required checks.
The successful demonstration confirms that SAS can be deployed in operational environments, providing a robust layer of security for civilian navigation services. The test also validates the interoperability of Galileo’s authentication infrastructure with existing receivers.
