Getty Museum Adds Rediscovered Velázquez Portrait to Collection

The J. Paul Getty Museum has acquired a 17th‑century portrait by Diego Velázquez, titled "Portrait of the Count‑Duke of Olivares." The painting, uncovered from a private collection, marks the museum’s first Velázquez acquisition. Commissioned for Cardinal Francesco Barberini in the 1620s, the work will debut at the Getty Center before touring to the Detroit Institute of Arts. The acquisition expands the Getty’s European art holdings and introduces a rare Velázquez masterpiece to the public eye.
