Somalia's food security situation remains uncertain due to erratic rains and pests affecting the 2026 Gu main season crops. The crops, which normally account for 60% of the country's total annual cereal output, were harvested in July after a below-average April-June Gu rainy season. The resulting moisture deficits led to widespread wilting and stunted growth, with 25-70% of cropland affected by severe drought in mid-June. Improved late-season rains and adequate Xagaa rains in July supported a partial crop recovery, but cereal production prospects remain uncertain. Livestock have also been severely affected by water and pasture shortages, leading to a decline in milk production and negatively impacting pastoralist households. High cereal prices, mainly due to reduced market supplies and high fuel prices, have further exacerbated the situation. According to the IPC analysis, about 6 million people (over 30% of the population) face IPC Phase 3 (Crisis) or worse levels of acute food insecurity.
