Google Boosts Inline Links in AI Search Results
WHY IT MATTERS
The change improves user access to reliable sources and may affect publisher traffic, highlighting the balance between AI convenience and content creator revenue.
What happened
Google has updated its AI search experience to place inline links higher in responses, a move announced in a recent blog post. The company’s AI Overviews and AI Mode now deliver answers in a customized view rather than a traditional list of links, prompting concerns that the format could reduce traffic to publishers.
In response, Google says it has been making "continued and substantial increases" to the presence of inline links in its AI experiences.
The new change aims to ensure key sources are easily clickable right when users need them, and the company is also announcing additional tweaks to highlight links in future updates.
