What happened
Google announced AlphaGenome Atlas, a resource that predicts the consequences of every possible single‑base variant in the human genome. The genome contains about 3 billion bases; testing the other three bases for each position yields 9 billion variants processed by AlphaGenome software.
The system focuses on non‑coding DNA, which makes up most of the genome and regulates protein‑coding genes. Some non‑coding regions are viral remnants, while others control where and when messenger RNAs are produced.
Consolidating all analyses in one package offers convenience, but its added value beyond existing training data will only become clear once researchers adopt it. The Atlas could streamline functional annotation of non‑coding variants, accelerating studies of gene regulation and disease mechanisms.
