Cyprus Government Mulls CCTV on All School Buses to Curb Delinquency

In a broad meeting on Monday, Cyprus’s Transport Minister Evie Tsolaki announced that the government is considering installing CCTV systems on every bus used by students to address isolated incidents of delinquent behaviour on school routes. The proposal, discussed with Education Minister Athena Michaelidou, House transport committee chairman Sotiris Ioannou, personal data commissioner Maria Christofidou and parents’ federation head Loizos Constantinou, will involve tenders, specifications and cost assessments, with the transport ministry covering expenses. Until cameras are operational, interim measures such as escorts, attendants and parent volunteers will be deployed. Footage will be used only in incidents, with strict compliance to data‑protection guidelines, and parents may opt out, choosing alternative transport. If a complaint arises, parents and schools will be notified and may face liability for damages.
