New Zealand Allocates $30 Million to Clean Up Crown‑Owned Contaminated Land

What happened
The New Zealand Government has approved $30 million from the Waste Disposal Levy to support investigation, remediation and risk management of contaminated Crown land. The funding, part of a $40 million investment announced in Budget 2025, will be split evenly between the Department of Conservation (DOC) and Land Information New Zealand (LINZ).
Together, DOC and LINZ oversee more than 3,000 sites where historic activities have left contamination that can threaten ecosystems, heritage areas and public access. The Ministry for Cities, Environment, Regions and Transport will oversee delivery, with DOC and LINZ reporting on progress.
The programme aims to reduce long‑term liabilities, protect communities and unlock future land‑use opportunities.
