New Zealand Sets Criteria to Endorse Voluntary Nature and Carbon Schemes
WHY IT MATTERS
The endorsement framework provides investors with a reliable quality signal, enabling increased capital flow into nature restoration and climate projects that meet New Zealand’s integrity standards.
What happened
The New Zealand Government announced a set of endorsement criteria for schemes operating in the country’s voluntary nature and carbon markets. The framework covers governance, transparency, independent assessment and proof of real environmental outcomes, and includes guidance on using scientific evidence to measure those outcomes.
It is tailored to New Zealand projects, including biodiversity‑focused and smaller initiatives that may not qualify for international accreditation. Endorsement signals that a scheme has been independently assessed against the criteria, but it does not guarantee performance.
The policy aims to give landowners, iwi, community groups and developers a clearer indicator of integrity‑standard compliance, while offering investors greater confidence in projects linked to endorsed schemes. The government expects the framework to unlock private investment in native planting, erosion control, wetland restoration and greenhouse‑gas removal projects.
