Cyprus President Aims for Substantive Progress on 19 Negotiation Proposals at Erhurman Meeting
WHY IT MATTERS
The meeting could revive stalled talks, shape Cyprus's future, and influence regional stability and climate diplomacy.
What happened
President Nikos Christodoulides will meet Turkish‑Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman on Tuesday to push for substantive progress on 19 proposals he presented at their last meeting. The proposals cover confidence‑building measures, the methodology of negotiations and the core substance of the Cyprus problem—three areas the UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres has identified as essential for an expanded conference. The Cypriot government expects a detailed discussion and a response to the issues raised, including potential progress on crossing points such as the Athienou‑Pyroi route, which the Greek‑Cypriot side has already accepted as a compromise.
While the proposals were also submitted to Guterres and his envoy Maria Angela Holguin, the government has denied reports that they include the return of Greek‑Cypriots to Varosha or the reopening of Famagusta port under EU supervision. It stresses that any concessions must remain within UN Security Council resolutions and the convergences already achieved. A separate dispute concerns a document recording previous convergences; the Cypriot side says the recording is complete but the document has not yet been handed to the parties.
Holguin is expected to visit Cyprus in October, and the government awaits confirmation of dates. The spokesman also noted that Turkey’s continued support for a two‑state solution is seen as an obstacle, but that genuine political will could still allow progress. Cyprus has also been invited to participate in the COP31 climate conference in Antalya, Turkey, with representation to be decided later.
