Cyprus Unveils Emergency Aid for Winegrowers Hit by Downy Mildew

Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis has announced an emergency state aid scheme for winegrowers affected by downy mildew. The scheme targets five grape varieties with production losses exceeding 30 per cent. Senekis emphasized the government's commitment to supporting viticulture, stating that the submission of damage declarations remains open until September 21. The ministry aims to process claims quickly, allowing affected producers to receive payment without delay. This new plan extends coverage to additional grape varieties, building on an earlier scheme covering Mavro and Xynisteri, where production losses reached at least 50 per cent. Senekis attributed this year's difficulties to prolonged drought, extreme weather events, and plant disease. Claims relating to downy mildew and hail damage have already been assessed, while damage from the recent storm remains under evaluation. The government expects €22 million in European funding next year to support winegrowers and winemakers through the common agricultural policy's strategic plan.
