Grand Rapids Commences Restoration of Historic River Rapids
WHY IT MATTERS
Reviving the rapids will restore fish migration routes, protect mussel populations, curb invasive species, and improve recreational and ecological value for the Grand Rapids community.
What happened
After almost twenty years of planning, construction has begun in downtown Grand Rapids to bring back the historic rapids that gave the city its name. The first phase of the project will remove four low‑head dams and replace them with natural rock formations designed to improve fish passage, habitat quality, and river access for residents and visitors.
In addition to the dam removal, the plan includes measures to protect native mussels and to control the spread of invasive sea lampreys.
The initiative marks a significant step toward restoring the river’s ecological integrity and enhancing recreational opportunities along the waterway.
