Neutrino Laser Concept Proven Impossible by New Theoretical Analyses

What happened
Researchers Ben Jones and Joseph Formaggio proposed that thousands of ultracold radioactive atoms in a Bose‑Einstein condensate could emit neutrinos in a coherent, laser‑like beam. Two independent studies by Nobel laureate Wolfgang Ketterle and colleagues showed that the required memory effect—where an atom’s first neutrino emission would bias subsequent emissions in the same direction—is far too brief, on the order of 10,000 billion times shorter than needed.
Moreover, the effect is an anti‑memory: after emitting a neutrino, an atom is prevented from emitting another immediately.
These findings rule out the most conventional neutrino‑laser design, though alternative mechanisms, such as simultaneous two‑neutrino emission, remain to be tested experimentally.
